This has been years in the workings, but now, after our Empathy open call, we're finally happy to announce the launch of the DESTITUTE label that brings another realm of operations to our collective endeavors. We received a ton of amazing tracks from artists all over the world — both names we know intimately as well as ones we only first discovered through our mailbox.
The choices were not easy to make, but we managed to work out a release line-up that we're extremely proud of and we cannot wait for you to hear. Our first mode of operation will extend our mixcast idea of linking up artists from abroad with ones from our own Polish backyard. This will come in the form of a series of two-track splits that we're super happy to be able to curate.
DST002 comes with tracks from Lorica and oto-hime, and switches both tempos and directions into a different register. On Vorthron Lorica constructs a sound image of a deranged beat tape track — dragged through machinic effect loops, stretched into different unfamiliar territories. Layered beats travel through different grooves and spaces, coming into focus for just brief moments and only to dissipate later into an atmospheric soundscape that contrasts beautiful harmony with bursts of distortion and unrecognizably stretched samples that disappear into silence. oto-hime, on the other hand, portrays the chaotic Polish experience of the recent past with a sound collage that is never at rest. Bursts of noise and cut-up breathing samples fight for space with choral and acoustic melodies that provide a brief, atmospheric recovery for the senses, which ultimately is subsumed by a roaring soundscape of heavily manipulated field recordings. This is an image of promise and suffering existing next to each other, ever unsafely.
Lorica (fka Avbvrn) is the project of Ian Rodriguez — artist, producer and composer.
His work as Lorica filters a surgical attention to detail and sound design through a wide-scope approach to atmosphere and the spatial qualities of music. The resulting work conjures up dramatic, vivid, and tactile sonic landscapes that recall classical forms and techniques, while drawing upon contemporary textures and approaches to rhythm and memory.

oto-hime is an electronic device imitating the sound of a waterfall, installed in public women's rooms across Japan. It is also the name of the princess of an underwater kingdom, a goddess appearing as an disembodied voice or seen in the form of a snow-white fox. Under this alias Edka Jarząb creates electroacoustic fables, using her own transformed voice.
